ISSUE 5

SEPTEMBER 2002

Spotlight on members...meet the Phelans!
by J.Lambert

"On the road again; Goin' places that I've never been; Seein' things that I may never see again; And I can't wait to get on the road again."

These lyrics from the Willie Nelson song come to mind after a conversation with Sioux Empire Cornhusker members Truman and Nancy Phelan.

Stepping back a few years, Truman and Nancy's personal travels and history began in Nebraska. Truman was born in a small town and moved to Lincoln while in high school. Following a two year hitch in the U.S. Army, which included an assignment in Korea, Truman graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1952 with a degree in business. Nancy spent her early years in Omaha, attended Iowa State University and then married Truman, her husband for more than forty years.

Truman and Nancy Phelan
Truman has fond memories of his college days at UNL. Johnny Carson was in his class and kept everyone entertained, often performing at sorority and fraternity events and at the local clubs. Truman also remembers it was much easier to obtain football tickets in those days.

After a trip to Sioux Falls, Truman joined the staff of Dunn & Bradstreet and moved permanently here in 1958. In 1966 he took a position with the financial institution which is now known as Wells Fargo Bank, worked predominantly in the Loan Division, and held the position of "Senior Regional Credit Officer" at the time of his retirement in 1994.

Nancy was involved in education for many years; she helped students with learning disabilities and, in more recent years, was very active in the Adult Literacy program.
The Phelan family expanded over the years: son Rich is now an engineer in Indianapolis and daughter Deb lives in Sioux Falls and is associated with an accounting group. Truman and Nancy have two grandchildren.

The word "retirement" was mentioned above; that is when the Phelan travels kicked into high gear. When you listen about their adventures, the only major country they seem to not have visited is Japan.

Truman and Nancy Phelan
Thank you for your
tremendous support!
Their travels have taken them to: Australia, Thailand, New Zealand, Hong Kong, mainland China (there is a story about being booted out of China because of an unfortunate bombing of a Chinese embassy elsewhere in the world during their trip to China), England, Holland, the Greek Isles, Africa, Eastern Europe, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, and the Iditarod.
Back home in Sioux Falls, Truman belongs to the Rotary Club plus volunteers for S.C.O.R.E. (Senior Corps of Retired Executives), Nancy loves to play bridge...then there is another focus in their lives, the University of Nebraska Alumni Association.

As members of the Sioux Empire Cornhuskers the Phelans have often attended Husker games in Lincoln and have participated in other local Sioux Falls events such as the annual Founder's Day dinner and the summer picnic.

This year the Phelans have made a very generous monetary donation to the University of Nebraska Alumni Association to establish the "Truman and Nancy Phelan Family Scholarship". Because of the Phelan's generosity, a selection committee for the Sioux Empire Cornhuskers awarded $1000 scholarships to two high school seniors, Derek Nelson and Kiki Hopp, both 2002 graduates of Sioux Falls Washington, currently freshman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

An Update from 2001 Scholarship Winner
Robert Heuer...

Dear Sioux Empire Cornhuskers,
Greetings to all of you. This is a short note to thank you again for the award you presented to me at the March 2001 Founder's Day Banquet. It was very beneficial to me in my first year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As I look back at my first year as a Cornhusker and all the memories I have from those months, I owe a big thank you to you and to your organization for helping me attend the University. It was a priceless experience.
I also want to report that I was successful in accomplishing one of my goals stated in my interview for the Sioux Empire Cornhuskers scholarship: I made the Cornhusker Marching Band. As a member of the Cornhusker Marching Band I played at all the home games as well as the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. It was a great experience. Unfortunately, I will not be in marching band next year, which is bad news, but I have good news to go with it. I won't be marching because I was selected to be a member of the 2002-2003 Nebraska Spirit Squad and am really excited about being on the team. Tryouts were in April and judging by my experience at our first cheering event, the Spring Football Game, I am in for a great year. I invite you to come down by the field and say "hi" if you are at any games.
Thank you once again not only for the award, but also for the moral support you gave me. The entire experience was wonderful and I am proud to be able to call myself a Sioux Empire Cornhusker award recipient. I hope to see you at a game next year. Go Huskers!

Sincerely, Robert A. Heuer

ANNUAL PICNIC

The annual Sioux Empire Cornhuskers summer picnic was held August 14th at Sertoma Park. The approximately 50 attendees were treated to gourmet picnic fare, bratwurst superbly prepared by master chef Gordy Schulte.
Fun and fellowship abounded. A raffle was held, many items were given away, including a pair of Troy State football tickets that went to Monica and Gerry Heuer.
A number of individuals addressed the group. President Mary Dick made several announcements, the one that

garnered the most response concerned the annual bus trip, this year to the Texas game. Marc Skolnick, associate executive director of the Alumni Association, spoke of budget cuts handed down by the Nebraska legislature affecting UNL. He also welcomed all alumni visiting Lincoln to the Wick Alumni Center, especially on Saturdays before home football games. He also spoke of a proposal expected to be passed by the Board of Regents, to allow children of an alumnus of UNL to attend UNL paying resident tuition, an announcement that elicited a very positive reaction from the gathered multitude.
A word of appreciation to all who attended, special thanks to those involved with planning and putting on the picnic. To those of you who didn't make it to this year's event, try to make an effort to attend next years. It's a nice, relaxing event, and what better a group of people to hang with than Cornhuskers.

BOARD MEMBERS SERVE
ST. FRANCIS HOUSE

The St. Francis House is a homeless shelter in northeast Sioux Falls that provides not only the basic necessities such as a hot meal, shower and bed, but also fellowship, friendship, and opportunities to do laundry and internet access for job searches.
The Sioux Empire Husker board prepared a dinner of Swedish meatballs, baked potatoes, green beans, buns, and chocolate cake. The kitchen duties included cooking, dishes, packing sack lunches for the next day, and clean-up. We served forty-five guests and enjoyed the experience. The helpful Huskers included: Joe Olsen, Dave & Mary Fleck, Mary Dick, Brian and Sue Wiswahl, and Dorothy Lambert.
The personal product drive held at the picnic also collected four tubs of items donated to the St. Francis house.

"Now here's the Voice of Husker Football, Jim Rose!"

By Paul Davidson, UNL Class of '81'

With all the changes and successes over the last few years with Cornhusker Football, a noticeable difference in Game-Day is the radio play-by-play coverage. Well Husker Fans, the excitement is back! The first game with Arizona State gave us a glimpse of what Jim Rose has to offer and he is offering up a Husker Cornucopia.

At 39 years of age, Jim Rose ascends the immortal throne of broadcasting Nebraska Cornhusker Football. His past predecessors (Dick Perry, Jack Payne, Lyell Bremser, Kent Pavelka, and Warren Swain) understood the phenomenon that is Husker play-by-play and the power and pressure that is centered on those blessed game-days.

There is a fascinating article about Jim Rose in Saturday's, August 24th Lincoln Journal Star. Dick Piersol interviews a few Nebraska notables including Jim Rose (his "Bio" and resume) and attempts to describe this phenomenon that has been created over the course of Nebraska Football history.

Jim Rose's first job in radio came at the young age of 15 as a high school sports reporter for KFOR-AM in Lincoln, Nebraska. Other jobs included radio station in Kansas before returning back to Lincoln in 1001 for KLIN-AM doing talk shows, high school play-by-play, and college baseball. After a stint in Kansas City (KMAZ-AM), Jim returned to Nebraska again as a co-host with KFAB-AM's morning radio show. Now he joins the highly coveted fraternity as the "Voice of Husker Football".

It is of course the responsibility of the play-by-play announcer to be fair and objective during the game. But, that's not what Husker fans crave! Who doesn't like Lyell Bremser's call of Johnny Roger's famous touchdown run in 1971, "Holy Man, Women, and Child!", or Kent Pavelka's "Touchdown, Touchdown, Touchdown!" And not forgetting, the wide spectrum of vocal inflection of Kent Pavelka's call of Tommie Frazier's touchdown run at the Fiesta Bowl.

We know it is early, but Jim Rose's knowledge and love for Nebraska Football combined with his "great command of the English language", should provide us with the same excitement that has caused fans in the stands at Memorial Stadium to once again, don their headsets for the play-by-play euphoria. Husker fans around the globe, however, will be the judges and the jury waiting to give their verdict. The big question is, when, where, and what will be Jim Rose's call that we remember.

TV WATCH PARTIES

Wouldn't it be great to "feel" like you're at Memorial Stadium-even if you can't actually be there? The Sioux Falls Chapter will host TV watch parties of Husker football at Cherry Creek Grill, East 26th Street in Sioux Falls.

Join us for the Penn State game September 14. The gathering begins 30 minutes prior to kickoff. We will have Husker trivia, door prizes, plus cheer on the Huskers!

(Don't be afraid to come and make some noise. You're not the only crazy fan out there-there's sanity in numbers.)

Call the Husker Hotline to check further event times: 605-742-5860

Sioux Empire Husker
Football Migration

The Sioux Empire Huskers have received forty tickets for the Texas/Nebraska football game November 2. We will be taking a bus, departing from Sioux Falls, with food, beverages, door prizes, videos, and plenty of spirit on the ride to Lincoln. The bus drops off passengers at the Wick Alumni Center which is within walking distance to the stadium and bookstore. After the Husker victory, passengers re-board the bus with food and beverages served on the return trip. Departure times will be determined once kick-off has been set, but in general the trip time allows for 2-3 hours in Lincoln to hit the Husker Huddle, University Bookstore, or your favorite watering hole.

Trip price is $175 which includes your ticket, all beverages and food, transportation, and almost more fun than most fans can handle in one day! There are still seats available-please call Mary Dick at 425-2371 or 425-2725 to reserve your seat. If you have already reserved your spots-please send checks to: Dave Fleck, 1915 S. Edinborough Drive, Sioux Falls, SD 57106.

Deadline is September 27, 2002 for reservations and payment.

If you have game tickets and hate to miss the fun, there are limited spots available for a reduced cost on the bus. This is going to be a great game-DON'T MISS OUT!

Husker Baseball

The Husker baseball team ended a very successful year at the College World Series in Omaha. Nebraska lost both games in the bottom of the 9th inning standing on the field falling to Clemson 11-10 and to South Carolina 10-8. But the Huskers finished strong at the end of the season. After beating Creighton, the team won 23 of 29 games winning the Big 12 title and then beat Richmond in the Super Regional to proceed to the College World Series.

After the season ended, Coach Van Horn left NU for the University of Arkansas. As head coach he accumulated a 214-92 record winning 3 Big 12 tournaments, 3 NCAA regionals, and 2 straight College World Series appearances. He is replaced by new head coach 37 year old Mike Anderson who has been in the NU system for 8 years. Coach Anderson is very optimistic about Nebraska's prospects for the 2003 season; with many very good athletes returning.
