Member Spotlight.... Steve Hauff
Someone once stated, "Do something you like and then it won't seem like work". Steve Hauff, a director on the board of the Sioux Empire Cornhuskers, says he is in a "fun" business.
When you chat with Steve, it doesn't take long to realize that he enjoys both the memorable experiences he has with his business ventures and from being well connected to the University of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska Alumni Association.

Steve's business ventures are centered on sports and sports equipment. He is president of Hauff MidAmerica Sports, which includes stores in Rapid City, Sioux Falls (Dakota Sports on West 41rst St.), and Sioux City, Iowa. Steve is also a stockholder in both the Hauff Sporting Goods store in Omaha and in Iowa Sports Supply store in Cedar Falls, Iowa. There is also a website "daksport.com".
Steve grew up in the athletic business; his father started selling for Spalding in 1930 and then opened the Sioux City store during the depression in 1933. Steve counted inventory at that first store at age 7 and has stayed connected to the sporting goods business for most of his life.
Employee sales staff at stores located in the various cities primarily sell equipment related to team sports to schools, cities, clubs and individuals managing teams. Most of the store's business is concentrated in the Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota states. They also sell to the military installations in the US and overseas. They have good sales in the US military schools in Europe and Japan. They have done some business with International Schools in the world too.
Steve was raised in Sioux City, Iowa where he graduated from East High School. He continued his education at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, obtaining his Bachelors Degree in business, followed by a Masters of Arts in Business Administration with a marketing major and accounting minor. Favorite college moment... when he finally finished his thesis for his Masters degree.
Steve was asked to serve on the National UNL Alumni Association board beginning in 1993. After serving an initial three year term, he was re-elected, serving as second VP, then first VP, overall Chairman for two years and then past chairman for two additional years.
Some of the Steve's most memorable fun alumni events: Heismann winner golf outings – three years; the Future Husker 8th grade Breakfast of Champions events tied into golf outing and meeting the Husker Heismann winners. Steve attended Tom's induction into the football Hall of Fame in New York City and stayed in the World Trade Center Marriott Hotel. Other special alumni memories include out-of-state football games to Cal and Notre Dame. He also took a trip with the traveling Huskers to Italy.
Steve is proud of the local Sioux Empire Cornhuskers because they Continued on page 4....

Husker Women's Softball Team Visits Sioux Falls
|

The Huskers went 6-0 in the tourney, posting wins over SDSU (13-1), St. Cloud State(3-2), and Augie (9-1) on Saturday, and won over USD (10-0), UND (9-1, 5 innings) and NDSU (2-0) on Sunday. NU finished the fall portion of their schedule with a 13-4 record.
The Team stayed at the Fairfield Inn, and were greeted by red and white balloon bouquets with "Welcome" and "Good Luck" banners from the Sioux Empire Husker Chapter.

| The team was greeted at Fuddruckers after Saturday's games byseveral members of the chapter, and grinned for photos. The women were tired after a long day of games, but had plenty of smiles and conversation for the fans.
The team travels 23 players and coaches. Head coach Rhonda Revelle is back at Nebraska after coaching in Oregon. She is a UNL graduate, and loves being in "Big Red" territory again. She told us that the softball program is fully funded with 12 scholarships. The players hold an average of 3.1 GPA, with women in all majors and from all over the country. Their fall schedule is easier than the spring, when they are on the road from Thursday to Sunday for 6 weeks.
The Huskers have played in the Augustana tournament before, and will be back again next year. They really appreciated the local support of fans, and a bigger reception will be planned for them next year.

Nebraska alumni association board report
By D. Fleck
University budget cuts have ultimately affected the Alumni Association because utilities for the Wick Center previously provided by the University are now being charged for. Goals and objectives for 2003/2004 involve the areas of Programming, Business and Finance, Communications, and Electronic Communications/Database Management.
Programming goals are focused on engaging in a variety of ways, as many alumni as possible with programs and with each other. The Communications Department continues to build our identity with our branding statement, "A Stronger Alumni, A Greater University." Alumni staff are excited about bringing back the Nebraska Cornhusker Yearbook in a partnership with Taylor Publishing. An important goal under Business and Finance is to aggressively market the Champions Club parking stalls. Michael Lach was recently hired as Director of Electronic Communications and Database Management. The goals for that department are being further developed and will include working with Harris Company to enhance the online community. The Alumni Association is working with the Admissions Department to recruit students from outside Nebraska.
The Association has many challenges ahead in evaluating programs and services provided to constituent societies, alumni, and supporting University programs affected by the budget cuts.

Volunteer Leadership Summit
The Volunteer Leadership conference had a different format than in previous years. The NAA invited chapter leaders from across the country, and members of the National NAA Board, with the total numbers of participants limited to about 40 this year.
The conference began on Thursday afternoon with a tour of the new UNL visitors center and a presentation by the Dean of Admissions. New recruiting plans were presented, and general questions of admissions requirements were answered. A new partnership with the NAA and Department of Admissions is being constructed that will engage the help of alumni across the country. The evening was concluded by a buffet and tour of "Bob's Gridiron Grill"- a new restaurant with Husker memorabilia from the early 1900's thru the present...over 20,000 items in 7 rooms! Its a new "must see" in Lincoln, located at 27th and HWY 2.
Friday started off with a breakfast and address by Ed Pacquette. The group was assigned discussion groups to discuss the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to chapters, and sharing ideas of what goes on at the chapter level. The luncheon was sponsored by Runza, and chapter awards were presented. Once again, the Sioux Empire chapter is "RED LETTER". Chancellor Harvey Perlman addressed the group and shared UNL's recent successes, and upcoming challenges. The incoming freshmen have an all time high ACT score of 24.4, and 4 of those students have a perfect score of 36.
The Volunteer Leadership Summit concluded with the Homecoming celebration at the Champions Club and football game against Texas A & M. Those attending from our chapter were Mary Dick, Chapter President, Dave Fleck, an NAA Regional Board Member, and Steve Hauff-past President of the NAA Board of Directors.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
- Check out the Sioux Empire Cornhuskers website at www.sehuskers.com
- Check out www.sportfitusa.com for 10% off all orders. Just phone your order in and mention you're a club member!
- Founders Day is set for March 12, 2004, social hour from 6pm-7pm with dinner and speaker to follow. Place tba, watch for a mailing in February as to the speaker sent from the NAA, the place, and registration. If anyone would like to help, please contact Mary Dick, 425-2371.
- Scholarship applications will be mailed out soon to area high schools for the 4-$1000 scholarships our chapter awards. If you need info contact Dave Fleck.
- Did you appreciate listening to Husker games on KSOO? The chapter sponsored the broadcast, but would still accept donations to help offset the cost of the broadcasts.
- Due to budget cuts, the NAA has reduced staff...one of these was the liaison from the NAA to constituent alumni associations. How does that affect us? For example, the Dental alumni, the largest constituent group, lost the publication of the Dental College news magazine it publishes, the planning and mailing of the Dental school reunion, and the staff support for any alumni events. Check with your own constituent alumni group to see how you are affected. (This doesn't affect us as much on a general chapter basis, except for mailings, etc. Of course, the university budget cuts affect us all on some level-but we are still here!)
- Marshall Gosmire, a 2003 Sioux Empire Chapter scholarship recipient, is a walk-on for UNL's soccer program, a club sport. We wish him continued success in soccer and his studies at UNL.
- The cheer squad is back off the ground again at UNL. Its great to watch Robert Heuer on the sidelines as a member of the cheer squad. Robert is a former scholarship winner, and always has a friendly smile and hug for fellow South Dakotans when he sees them.

Nebraska vs. penn state
Yet another successful bus trip was held this year on Saturday, September 13th. The bus was filled with many ragging Husker fans as it pulled out of The Oaks Hotel parking lot. Drinks and a sack lunch from Quizno's was enjoyed by all. Additional fans were picked up at Vermillion which added to the fun. Plenty of time was built into the schedule for fans to engage in many of Lincoln's game day hot spots.
The group sat in the South Stadium, the same location as in years past. The day was perfect for fall football.
The Huskers pulled out a victory over the Nittany Lions allowing everyone to return to the bus in good spirits. The return trip was long as the game went well into the evening hours. Please note, this event may be in jeopardy for next year due to increasing University budget cuts.
If you left something on the bus, please contact Mary Dick or Dave Fleck.

have good dedicated members who work toward improving higher education, but have fun at the same time. He pointed out the Sioux Empire Cornhuskers conduct several activities centered around football, but education is very important. Steve credits having met many people as the result of being a member of our local Sioux Empire Cornhusker Alumni chapter.
Steve is married to Susan Kruse (Hainje) Hauff. He has two sons, Curt and Jerry Hauff. Both boys are married, but Steve has no grand children yet.
Steve's hobbies are working at athletic events, playing golf, bicycling, and traveling. Because he is involved in the sporting business, he also finds enjoyment and relaxation while watching football, basketball, track etc.
Although Sioux Falls is a great place to live, Steve and Sue travel to Phoenix several times each winter to enjoy fun in the warm sun.

Annual Summer Picnic
With Dave Fleck playing the part of "grill master" there was no way anyone could have gone home hungry from this year's summer picnic! The event was held August 7th at Sertoma Park. Attendance was at an all time high due in large part to wonderful advertising from KSOO radio.
New memberships and possible friendships were made at this year's event. New faces both young and old were present in hopes of getting a little Husker pre-season fire burning in their bellies!
The menu of the day was brats and hotdogs with several salads and desserts and beverages of all kinds. A pair of game tickets were given away, as well as, several door prizes.
The evening was perfect for this event. If you were unable to attend this year, plan to attend next year. It's definitely one event you don't want to miss!
