MARCH 2005

Member Spotlight.... Dave Fleck

by B. White

Chapter Treasurer, Dave Fleck was born and raised in Stromsburg, NE, just 15 miles north of York, NE. Dave is one of four children, three of which attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska. Dave was a high school standout in both basketball and track. To family knowledge, he still holds the Stromsburg High School record for most number of rebounds in a game and the fastest time for the two mile run. Dave graduated from Stromsburg High School in the spring of 1968. He immediately went on to attend college at UNL, majoring in Civil Engineering. He received his bachelor's degree in December of 1972.

Mary & Dave Fleck
While attending UNL, Dave met the love of his life Mary (Lenhoff) Fleck who is from Crofton, NE. They were married on August 19, 1972. Mary did not attend UNL, but certainly is a true Husker at heart. There's no doubt that she was raised the "right" way!

Dave's first job was with Nucor Steel in Norfolk, NE. It was during this time that Dave and Mary welcomed the first of three little bundles into their lives. Brooke was born in December of 1973. Shortly there after, Angie was born in May of 1975 and with the new baby came a new job. Dave moved on to his current company of Sioux Falls Construction. The new job meant lots of moving for the Fleck family as Dave was a Superintendent and had to be wherever the construction projects were located. About the time child number three (Jeff-December 1976) came along, the family permanently made their residence in Sioux Falls.

Dave has steadily moved up the company ranks and is currently the President of Sioux Falls Construction. He also has served as the Vice-President and President for the South Dakota Chapter of the American General Contractors Association (AGC). He currently sits on the National Board for AGC as well. Dave is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and has his Professional Engineering license in both the State of South Dakota and Nebraska.

Along with his professional accomplishments, Dave has been extremely involved in giving back to his community. He sits on several volunteer boards throughout the business community and his church. He is most proud of his work with Habitat for Humanity and St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Dave has been a member of the Sioux Empire Husker Alumni Chapter for almost as long as he's lived in Sioux Falls. In the past, he has served as the Chapter President and continues

2004 Summer Picnic
Who can turn down a picnic atmosphere...a park setting, plenty of sunshine, kids bouncing nearby on playground equipment, "brats and dogs" sizzling on the grill, friends and soon-to-be friends sharing chitchat.

The Sioux Empire Cornhuskers hosted their popular summertime family picnic at Sertoma Park in Sioux Falls on Thursday, August 5, 2004. It was time for young and young-at-heart University of Nebraska Alumni and friends to meet and greet for friendship, food and sharing favorite UNL memories.

Over 80 area alumni and friends gathered for this year's event and were joined by special guests Marc Shkolnick (and family) from the UNL Alumni office in Lincoln. Marc provided insight into some of the changes occurring at the University and pointed out how important alumni members are as they share their volunteer time and talents especially in the areas of public relations and student recruitment.

Mary Dick, President of the Sioux Empire Cornhuskers, handed out a variety of door prizes (you can imagine the popular color was red and the logo had a Husker theme!). A lucky raffle winner took home two tickets to the Nebraska-Colorado football game.

Thanks to everyone who attended or helped organize the 2004 picnic and plan to gather again in 2005 for what is sure to be an even larger event!

SIOUX EMPIRE HUSKERS MIGRATE TO LINCOLN
FOR COLORADO FOOTBALL GAME

The annual trip to Lincoln for a Husker football game got an early start the day after Thanksgiving. Instead of being at our local retailers to do Christmas shopping, we were loading up the bus at 5:00a.m. to make it to Lincoln for an 11:00a.m. football game with Colorado. Twenty football fans from our Chapter had a fun filled day reminiscing on the ride down and enjoying time in Lincoln as well as the game. The only disappointing part of the day was the score at the end of the game. Valentino's pizza and refreshments awaited everyone when they returned to the bus for the ride home. Fun was had by all as well as helping our local Chapter raise money for our scholarship program. Be sure to watch for information on our 2005 football migration.

Volunteer Leadership Conference 2004

Jim Lambert, Brooke White and Mary Dick attended the Volunteer Leadership conference at the Wick Alumni Center in Lincoln, October 28 and 29, 2004. The weekend kicked off with a buffet and Husker Jeopardy at Bob's Gridiron grill on Thursday night. Thirty chapters of the Alumni Association were represented with approximately seventy board members in attendance.

Friday morning began with a catered breakfast by Premier Catering and a welcome from Ed Paquette.  The day's topic centered around large and small group discussions on alumni chapter best practices.  Some of the ideas that your representatives liked and would like to implement are:  Senior send-off for area students attending UNL, book club for members, Breakfast Club that meets on a regular basis to discuss sports and happenings at UNL, family-friendly events like Halloween party or Santa event for young alums with children, and incorporate other Big 12 Chapters into local events. The awards lunch honored outstanding chapters and Red Letter Chapters. The Sioux Empire Chapter once again earned Red Letter status. Marc Scholnick was also honored during the day with gifts, stories, and pictures from various chapters.  Marc headed to Colorado State for a position in their Alumni organization and will be missed by chapters across Husker Nation.

The weekend ended with the Come On Home Celebration at the Champions Club and the football game against Missouri on Saturday. Once again, the conference has all sorts of great people who work hard across the country to promote the University of Nebraska and the Alumni Association.  It is always a treat to meet other Huskers and share ideas....and of course, spend a weekend in Lincoln!

Scholarship Winners 2005

Because of last year's record number of scholarship applicants, the Sioux Empire Huskers decided to limit the area of their scholarship offerings for 2005 to a 75 mile radius of Sioux Falls. Even with the restrictions, there were 42 applicants for what the students thought were 4 scholarships. The Sioux Empire Huskers were in a rare situation this year in which we were able to award not 4, but 6 $1000 scholarships. Outstanding fundraising and generous donations allowed for the additional scholarships.

This year's candidates were extremely exceptional making the decision process very difficult. The Sioux Empire Huskers strive not only to find students with a great academic background, but also a financial need. Our goal is to help those students who might not be able to go to UNL without our financial gift. We also look for those students who have made UNL their #1 choice in terms of where they plan to attend college. We want to know that our scholarships will be used. In the event that one or more of our winners decides not to attend UNL, we have a list of alternates to pass the scholarship on to.

Please plan to attend this year's Founder's Day/Scholarship Banquet so you can meet Holli Brown & Justin Tilberg of Mitchel H.S., Steven Dix & Keeley Bunkers of S.F. O'Gorman H.S., Danielle Buehner of S.F. Christian H.S., and Kacie Meyers of S.F. Roosevelt H.S. our 2005 Scholarship winners!

HUSKER BOOK CLUB

One of the ideas that was shared in Lincoln at the Volunteer Leadership conference is a book club.  We would like to see if anyone is interested in starting/joining a book club.  This will be an opportunity to share a great book you have read, would like to read, or just a chance to have coffee and visit with other people.

Anyone interested in joining, please contact Mary Dick at 605.361.7747 or bigredsmama@triotel.net.

ZOO BOO 2005

The executive board has been discussing the possibility of setting up a booth at this year's Zoo Boo event. The event runs for 3 consecutive nights October 21-23, 2005. There are approximately 2000 kids and adults who pass through the zoo gates each night. Big Red gum has already been discussed as the candy of "chose" for this event.

If you'd be interested in volunteering or donating to this event, please contact any board member.

FOUNDER'S DAY 2005

The Sioux Empire Huskers will hold their Annual Founders Day Banquet, Saturday March 5, 2005 at St Mary's Parish Hall in Sioux Falls.  The dinner will be catered by Olde Towne Catering.  Social hour featuring soft drinks and adult beverages will begin at 6pm, with the dinner beginning at 7pm.  The guest speaker will be Sean Callahan, from Huskers Illustrated and Rivals.com.  He will speak on the new football recruits, and showing a video featuring some of the new Husker stars.  (we could all use some words of hope in that category, right?)   The honored guests for the evening will be the 2005 Sioux Empire Husker scholarship winners and their parents.  There will be door prizes and a silent auction of coveted Husker memorabilia.  Cost is $25 per adult, $10 per student and is a family-friendly, business casual event.  For reservations or questions, please contact Mary Dick at 605.361.7747 or at bigredsmama@triotel.net.

continues to be a tireless worker as the Chapter Treasurer. He also is currently a member of the National Alumni Board. Attending meetings regularly at the Wick Alumni Center in Lincoln, NE.

During his free time, Dave can be found enjoying the outdoors. He has grown up a true Nebraska boy hunting, fishing, and camping. Most recently, he has been able to share these with his four grandchildren. Besides Mary, they've found an extra special place in his heart.

So, if you're looking for Dave & Mary check the highway...they're probably headed down to Yankton to enjoy another weekend in their new travel trailer. Or check your nearest airport, with all of Dave's professional involvement, they're always traveling somewhere!

Thanks Dave for your many years of service!

Feeding the Homeless
Of Sioux Falls

Friday, February 11th the Sioux Empire Cornhuskers once again participated in their annual service project at the St. Francis House. Italian was the food of choice this particular evening. Serving up spaghetti, Caesar salad, and garlic bread were Dave (aka Spaghetti Dipper) & Mary Fleck, Ryan & Brooke White, Jim Lambert, and Brian Wiswall (aka Sauce Guy). Thanks to all these volunteers for their wonderful efforts. Additional thanks go out to Paul Davidson for the garlic bread and Dorothy Lambert for her dessert contributions. The brownies and cake were both big hits!

After dinner, those in attendance were welcomed on a full campus tour of the facilities. It was extremely humbling to hear about the 700+ homeless of Sioux Falls. 35 men and woman and two families can be found at this shelter most nights throughout the year. It's through the generosity of people like the Sioux Empire Huskers that this facility remains an available resource for those in need.
